Sixth Form entry requirements

For new students, entry to the Sixth Form is dependent on GCSE grades, an interview with the Headmaster and a school reference. To enter our Sixth Form and be successful, we like to see grade 7s in the GCSE subjects a student wishes to take at A Level (8s for Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths) or in relevant subjects, with at least six grades 6s overall. We also accept students onto BTEC Sport and Exercise Science plus one A Level.  For this combination we like to see at least six grade 5s at GCSE overall, with a 7 in a relevant subject for the A Level. Below this attainment level, it is likely that we are not the right match for a student, although we are happy to discuss exceptional circumstances.

Application forms can be obtained from the Admissions team. Receipt by us of the completed application form will be taken as permission to send for a confidential report from the pupil’s present school, as part of the normal admissions process. Parents or guardians should therefore advise the pupil’s present head teacher that they are making an application to Ipswich School. The school year begins in early September and it is highly desirable that new pupils should join us then. Occasionally pupils are admitted to the school in the Lent and Summer Terms. It is our policy to ensure equitable treatment of all pupils.

Awards

Sixth Form scholarships are awarded for academic excellence, for exceptional musical talent and for an all-rounder who will do well academically and contribute outstandingly in other areas of school life such as sport, art or drama. Sports Scholarships are also available. Our very top academic scholars are known as Queen’s Scholars in honour of Queen Elizabeth I. Those candidates shortlisted for a sports scholarship will be observed in the sport of their choice.  Further details on the scholarship assessment process are available from our Admissions team and offers are made in early December.

A number of Ipswich School means-tested bursaries are available.

School Rules

Acceptance of a place involves a commitment by the parents or guardians to uphold the School Rules and Regulations. These are sent to the parents of all successful candidates and are also available on request from the Admissions Office.
