Jazz pianist and singer Joe Stilgoe to top the bill at this autumn’s Ipswich School Festival of Music
Described by the Sunday Times as “a very British Harry Connick Jr”, Joe Stilgoe will make a welcome return to the Ipswich School Festival of Music, launching the 2016 Festival with his stand-out brand of jazz which combines wit and musicality with flair.
Joe played at Ipswich School in 2013, and is one of the most talked about acts since the Festival began seven years ago. He will appear in the Great School concert hall on Thursday 6 October.
The line-up for the Festival, sponsored once again by Seven Telematics, also includes award-winning a cappella vocal group The Swingles on Friday 7 October and the popular Big Band evening, this year featuring the Ipswich Musicians’ Union Big Band alongside the Ipswich School Big Band, will bring a jazz club vibe to the concert hall on Monday 10 October. Ticket prices for this event include canapes, and audience members will be able to buy drinks to take to their tables.
Once again this year the Festival will link up with the Ipswich Chamber Music Society on Saturday 8 October with a performance by the Solem Quartet. The Royal College of Music Strings, whose virtuoso playing was much admired at last year’s Festival, will bring the week to a classical close on Tuesday 11 October.
Anyone planning to attend the Family Concert on the afternoon of Sunday 9 October is invited to bring a teddy bear with them to join in the fun, as the concert will include a performance of Paddington Bear’s First Concert, along with popular film and tv themes.
The Ipswich School Festival of Music would not be complete without its exciting and innovative education programme, and this year is no exception. STOMP workshops, vocal sessions with The Swingles and a Strings Day led by the Royal College of Music musicians will all give young people the chance to learn from top professional musicians.
Sion Parry, Ipswich School’s Director of Music and the Festival Artistic Director, said: “I’m delighted that we have another great line up of top professional musicians joining us at Ipswich School this October. We hope they will entertain audiences and inspire young musicians with a diverse range of musical styles, from jazz, to a cappella vocals, to classical strings.”
He added: “As well as offering our special ‘early bird’ reduction of 10% on many tickets bought before the beginning of July, we have maintained our £5 student tickets. With three sell-out concerts last year, I would encourage people to book their tickets as soon as possible, ready for some memorable concerts in the autumn.”
Warwick Dunnett, Managing Director of Festival sponsors Seven Telematics, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Festival of Music once again. The chance to hear top quality music here in Ipswich is very exciting, and I hope many people will come and see what the Festival has to offer.”
The Festival runs from Thursday 6 October to Tuesday 11 October at Ipswich School. The main venue is Great School on Ivry Street, opposite Ipswich Preparatory School.
