A Classic trip for Year 9

On 17 March, 30 Year 9 students studying Classics and Latin left for a 4 day trip. After a long journey, we
arrived in Cirencester.

Before heading to our accommodation at Macaroni Wood, we visited the shops and Cirencester Amphitheatre, where we learnt about what it was like when it was a fully functioning performance space. We then traveled to Macaroni Wood and spent the rest of Friday evening riding the bikes there and visiting the pigs.

After an early start on Saturday, involving a 6am jog with Miss Hutton, we went back into Cirencester’s High Street, this time to visit the Corinium Museum. There we learnt about the history of the area from the Stone Age to the early Roman times. My favourite part was when I learnt how to play tabula, a Roman board game.

We then enjoyed a workshop where we learnt how archeologists use objects that they find in ruins of villas to figure out what kind of people lived in those villas. Speaking of villas, we spent the afternoon on a tour of Chedworth Roman Villa. Learning about daily Roman life was far more immersive when we were actually walking through where those
lives happened. After returning back to the villa, we rounded off the day with a bonfire and toasted marshmallows.

On the beginning of the last full day of the trip we found ourselves in the minibuses, as we took the two hour journey to Bath. The morning was spent visiting the Roman Baths, which was partly the original baths and also the surrounding museum. We learnt about the history of the baths, the lives of the people who visited them, and even drank some water from the springs that were (and still are) used to heat the baths!

After a quick detour to eat lunch, walk around town, and buy some almond croissants, we visited Bath Abbey and climbed to the very top of its 212 step tower! It was definitely a rewarding and very enjoyable last day. Sunday was mainly spent travelling back to Ipswich, though we did take a quick stop for lunch at St Alban’s Roman Theatre, which was a nice reminder of the first place we visited and provided another opportunity to learn about Roman entertainment. It was a great end to a fantastic trip. Thank you to Mr Robson and Miss Hutton for organising the trip for us.
