This week (18-24 May 2020 ) is Mental Health Awareness Week and it could be one of the most important weeks that the Mental Health Foundation has ever run due to the current situation.

This year’s theme is kindness as it is closely related to mental health. The Mental Health Foundation said they chose kindness because “of its singular ability to unlock our shared humanity. Kindness strengthens relationships, develops community and deepens solidarity.”

I personally think that strong relationships and community are very important right now, during the coronavirus pandemic. Many people’s mental health may be declining right now due to the uncertainty and fear of the current situation and small or large acts of kindness can really help improve someone’s day.

So what can you do to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week this year?

The Mental Health Foundation suggests you spend this week reflecting on an act of kindness, practising acts of kindness to yourself and others and sharing ideas that could help build a kinder society.

The Mental Health Foundation also has some other tips and tricks to help look after your mental health during the coronavirus lockdown.

You should try and stay in touch with your friends by social media or on the phone. Using facetime to stay in touch with friends and relatives can help you feel more connected, making you and your relatives and friends feel better mentally.

Moreover, you could create a daily routine to make your days more structured. Make sure you spend some time away from your screens reading or doing exercise as that is also important for your mental health.

Picking up a new hobby can also help to keep your mind from becoming too bored. You could pick up something artistic such as drawing, knitting or embroidery. Most hobbies are cheap and easy to start with the things you already have in your home.

Finally, try to use reputable sources to find your information. Non-reputable sources can spread rumours and begin speculation, all of which can fuel anxiety or possibly hysteria.

Make sure you look after and check in on your friends and relatives and look after yourself. Most importantly, make sure you stay safe. Stay at home if you can and wash your hands often.
