Black History Month

This October marks the annual ‘Black History Month’, a month-long recognition and celebration of important figures in black British culture. Originating in the United States, the season first came to London in 1987, and has since grown over the years to become an extremely significant and worthwhile cause.

Ipswich School will be taking part in a number of events to commemorate Black History Month before the end of this half-term.

Firstly, there will be a chance for pupils to educate themselves about prominent black Britons who have often been overlooked by history, with a display up outside the dining hall, and also examples throughout the school. There are a number of Black History Month features in this week’s school newsletter, the Occasional, and the school library staff have put together a display of recommended reads.

There will also be a specially-themed lunch on Friday 16 October, and on the same day, we will be joining the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign, which started with the aim of raising awareness surrounding racist abuse of players in football and other sports. Pupils are encouraged to wear an item of red clothing along with their normal uniform to show their stand against racism. This could be socks, a hat or an item of red sports kit if Friday is a sports day, in order to demonstrate their personal commitment to standing up to racism.

It is important now, more than ever, to focus on our country’s strengths. Our school is a proud part of the UK, and an understanding of this country’s multiculturalism is a key part of our ethos. As a school, we need to remember and appreciate the historical presence of black figures that have shaped our history. This will effectively further the pride and bolster the confidence of our community as a whole to stand against current prejudices in our society.

The work this month on raising awareness of these historic figures is a testament that in future we can better fight against discrimination, and be more tolerant and mindful members of society.

We hope that you will join us in commemorating the lives and achievements of those who are often overlooked, and demonstrate solidarity against racism.
