British Science Week at Prep

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that took places between 11-20 March this year.

In the Prep, one of the ways in which the children were encouraged to approach British Science Week was creatively, through a house poster competition – to design a poster linked to growth; the life cycle of a chicken, population growth, personal growth or even the growth of their own family. The winners from each house will be entered into a national poster competition and could be in with a chance of winning a range of science-themed prizes.

Here are some of the other things the children got up to during British Science Week:

Year 1 enjoyed a Spring walk – observing seasonal changes like the new growth on blossom trees and then made their very own windmill daffodils.

Working in pairs, Year 2 carried out observations of trees at Westwood and noted the living creatures on, in, under and around the trees.

Year 3 thought about population growth and the effects this can have on the planet. They explored how they could reduce food miles by designing a planet-friendly, plant based burger.

Using observational and recording skills, Year 4 investigated how temperature affects the growth of spring onions.

It was all about proteins and how the shape of the chain of amino acids determines their function by creating their own ‘microscopic machines’ for Year 5.

Year 6 tied their Science Week project into their current topic of space and have been thinking about growth as one of the life processes and they have designed an organism that would survive on Mars.

It was a fantastic week of Science and learning!
