Classic statues

On Wednesday 9 February, all of the Year 11 Classics students huddled onto a minibus and travelled to the Cambridge Museum of Classical Archaelogy.

There we saw various Greek and Roman sculptures through the ages in addition to statues from their set sources from the GCSE course. These include small busts of Roman emperors to large statues of Gods which peer down at you ominously.

It was truly an insightful experience being able to witness the artwork in person, it helped to put them into perspective to better understand how the intended message was conveyed. It made me realise how dominating statues can be, which is hard to show in a tiny image.

One particular example was a giant statue of Hercules which stood well above two metres with intricate and masterful detail in the anatomy. Additionally, there were well known statues such as the ‘Prima Porta’ and the ‘discus thrower’ as well as the pediments which were placed at the top of Greek temples.
