On Wednesday 1 February, the Year 11 classics class went to Cambridge to visit the Classical Museum of Archaeology, where there were many recreated plaster artwork and sculptures of Greeks and Romans.
It is a museum that houses one of the largest plaster cast collections in the world! The collection consists of several hundred casts, including some of the most famous surviving ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, for example statues of Hercules and the goddess Athena.

The class looked at metopes and friezes from the temples that we had previously studied. It was interesting to see them up close, as we could see the intricate detail and huge size of these characters. We compared sculptures, drew them and looked at how effective these sculptures were. We also studied art as a form of propaganda, and looked for secret messages and themes behind the artwork, for example the Augustus of prima porta.

It was overall a great and a very enjoyable experience.
