County hockey success – for six Ipswich School teams!
Pupils and staff at Ipswich School are celebrating this week after four of the boys’ outdoor hockey teams won the Suffolk county championship title for their age group.
The U11 boys from the Prep School and the U13, U14 and U16 teams from the Senior School were all victorious – a total of over 40 boys who can now add county titles to their honours.
This follows in the wake of the school’s U18 boys’ team reaching the last four in the national indoor hockey competition earlier in January, and the U18 and U16 boys’ indoor hockey teams both picking up the Suffolk county titles at the end of 2017. All in all, this brings the total number of boys involved in the county victories this season to over 60 from six teams.
Ipswich School Headmaster Nicholas Weaver said: “To have six teams excel in the highly competitive schools’ hockey competition demonstrates the depth of talent we have at Ipswich School, across such a broad age range. Many of those in our Senior School teams started their hockey careers playing in the U11 team at the Prep School, as did our international hockey stars George Pinner, Harry Martin and Hannah Martin.”
He added: “Well done to all our pupils and their coaches – their hard work and passion has certainly paid off, and we look forward to the challenges of the regional competitions now.”
The last time that school won the county championships at U11, U13, U14 and U16 in the same year was 2008. The U13 team at the time was captained by James Gall, who is another former Ipswich School pupil now playing in the England and GB teams.
The U18 boys play a knockout competition in the outdoor season, rather than the county and regional competitions which the younger age groups play in. The Ipswich School team are currently through to the third round of this competition.
