Eco Council visit a recycling and recovery centre

Before half term, the Eco Council went on a trip to the Recycling and Recovery Centre at Blakenham. This is where rubbish, that would otherwise be sent to landfill, is converted into enough energy to power 40,000 homes.

We went to see how this process happens and to learn some important lessons about what can and cannot be recycled and how we can work together to make a difference to climate change. We were all shocked by the sheer volume of waste that is sent to the Centre every week, and it was incredible to be able to witness this for ourselves. It really made us realise that we are producing far too much waste and we need to work harder to reduce, re-use and recycle.

We had a fantastic tour of the recycling and recovery plant, our favourite part was seeing the furnace where the rubbish is burnt and the heat generated is used to create superheated steam which powers a turbine to produce electricity. This greatly reduces our county’s need to rely on fossil fuels and stops our beautiful countryside being filled with rubbish as landfill sites.

We saw where the ash from the furnaces is then cooled and then collected to be sold to building companies to be turned into aggregate, and leftover metal is sold to railway companies for building new railway tracks. Everything has a second life.

We feel really lucky to live somewhere that cares about our environment as much as we do, and we cannot wait to teach our friends and families about the importance of proper recycling and reducing the amount we put in the bin!
