Some time ago, the Chaplain commissioned a set of House Banners for the School Chapel from me. I went through lots of design ideas before selecting roundels showing birds of prey, a sweeping cursive font and shaped lower edges.

The birds are based on those on the Prep’s House T shirts, which were designed by Hannah Mee, Prep Librarian and Teaching Assistant. Each word is cut as a single entity, so it involved scaling up, tracing, cutting out, bonding, and finally sewing the words on to the background.

The roundels are painted with acrylic paint on calico. Four children were each given a very basic silhouette to work on, and lots of photos of birds of prey to help them get the plumage correct. Each bird is pictured against a different type of terrain: peregrine (cliff, Hannah, Gleave) goshawk (forest, Bella, Mermagen) kestrel (farmland, Rufus, Notcutt) and red kite (moorland, Kate, Yelland). Well done to these talented young artists, each of whom has been awarded an Art Scholarship to Senior School next year.

I hope that the banners will provide a useful house focus in Chapel and be enjoyed for many years to come!
