On Thursday 28 March 2019, Ipswich Prep School welcomed author Nick Butterworth back to the school to celebrate the anniversary of Percy the Park Keeper’s first book, One Snowy Night.
It has been 30 years since the iconic character Percy the Park Keeper first appeared in Nick’s books. Percy’s character is set to return in his brand new picture book, One Springy Day.
Mr Butterworth was also at the Prep in January 2018 as the guest of honour at the official opening of The Lodge Day Nursery. He was invited to unveil the official plaque dedicating the building at the opening ceremony.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary the author was invited in to Ipswich Prep School to talk to the pupils about illustrating, writing and the 30 years of Percy. He read his new book, One Springy Day, to children from the Lodge Day Nursery up to Year 6. He also did his famous Squiggles game, where a child draws a squiggle and he makes it into a fantastic drawing. Mr Butterworth was given the honour of presenting certificates to Year 1 and 2 pupils who had selected to have their drawings on the Prep School’s little Elmer as part of Elmer’s Learning Herd.
After this Mrs Mee, Prep Librarian, presented a special anniversary cake to Mr Butterworth. Made by Ipswich School Catering department, the Victoria sponge cake featured a bunting flag which said congratulations from all at Ipswich Prep.
The Prep has welcomed lots of authors to the school and in the past has had visits from authors such as Tom Palmer, Steve Cole, Jeanne Willis, The Two Steves and Kjartan Poskitt.
Mrs Childs, Prep Head, said: “It is so lovely to welcome Nick Butterworth back to the Prep. We are absolutely delighted that we could share a birthday cake with him to celebrate the famous book which we all love to read here at the school.”
