Whilst April may be the start of the summer sports seasons in schools, pupils at Ipswich Prep were successfully competing in the Eastern Region Snowsports Association (ERSA) schools’ event at the Suffolk Ski Centre.
Ipswich Prep School won five medals – three bronze and two gold – and were awarded the trophy for the fastest Junior Team, which had been won by Norwich School for a number of years.
Amanda Childs, team manager and Head of Ipswich Prep, said: “I am extremely proud of the 19 strong team who all skied incredibly well, most of whom were skiing competitively for the first time. It is an excellent event to introduce children to ski racing whilst also having a great deal of fun which was, by far, my main objective. Getting the silverware was the icing on the cake.”
The Prep School won individual bronze medals for the U10 girls and U10 boys, a team bronze medal for the U12 mixed team, and gold medals for the U10 girls’ team and U10 boys’ team.
Ipswich School’s Senior School also fielded a team of skiers at the event, and won a bronze medal for the U14 girls’ team and a gold medal for the U14 mixed team.
Skiing is becoming very popular, and successful at Ipswich Prep. The school runs a very successful ski club at the Suffolk Ski Centre which gives children an opportunity to develop skills in an individual sport, something which is especially important for those children who are not so keen on team sports. A skiing fixtures programme is planned by the Prep School to build on their recent success.
The Schools’ Race 2106, which took place on Sunday 24th April, was open to all schools in the region and includes schools from Essex, Rutland, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
Children compete primarily in team races but may also take part as individuals. In the Junior Races – Under 10 and Under 12 categories – each section has races for girl teams, boy teams, mixed teams and individuals of both boys and girls.
