Ipswich School girls are crowned national cricket champions

Ipswich School’s U15A girls’ cricket team were crowned national champions yesterday (Monday 7 September) in a thrilling day at the National T20 Cricket Finals.

The team of girls first played a semi-final encounter against Reigate Grammar School. Ipswich won the toss and elected to field, and tight bowling restricted Reigate to 114 for 6 from the allotted 20 overs. Ipswich batted confidently in reply with an excellent partnership between Eliza (40) and Evie (27) taking Ipswich over the line in the 18th over and into the final.

In the final against Clifton College, Ipswich again elected to field first and produced a scintillating bowling display with continuous energy and dynamism on show in the field throughout the Clifton innings. Wickets from Petra (4-12), Evie (2-20), Laila (2-9) and Ishani (1-9) reduced Clifton to 72 all out in under 14 overs. Ipswich batted confidently in reply, with important contributions coming from Eliza, Petra and Amie.

This ensured ultimate victory by 7 wickets in the 11th over, crowning Ipswich as deserved Champions of the National T20 Cup.

The team coach, Sam Bennett-King said afterwards: “Huge congratulations to all members of this exceptional team on their outstanding achievements both during the season and on finals day. Very well done indeed!”

Nicholas Weaver, Headmaster of Ipswich School, added: “We are very proud of our girls and this amazing achievement, which shows their passion for cricket, and their dedication to training and to each member of the team.”

Ipswich School first introduced girls’ cricket to the summer sporting timetable in 2014. In 2019, our then U15A girls won the silver medal in the same competition.
