New lecture preview

“The Mad Woman in the Attic- Fact or Fiction?” is the upcoming Academic Excellence lecture talk from Dylan J-M, Year 13.

This talk will be a thought-provoking discussion on the depiction of mentally ill women primarily in 19th century literature, but also in contemporary fiction and film. Dylan plans on exploring the idea of female insanity as a paradoxical concept; both degrading women by falling back on harmful stereotypes, but also giving female characters agency to finally control the narratives of their stories. He plans on discussing popular literature such as ‘The Bell Jar’ and ‘Jane Eyre’, while also including the modern perspective of film – namely ‘Black Swan’.

If anyone’s interested in learning about the portrayal of female insanity within literature and film, come to the Library on Wednesday 16 November at 4.30pm, with refreshments being available from 4.20pm.
