Night of blues and boogie is festival success

The Festival of Music’s Blues, Boogie and Swing event last Friday was absolutely fantastic, described by Mrs Steensma, Director of Music, as “inspiring”.

The early afternoon kicked off with a Primary School Jazz Concert. 250 pupils attended from schools including Ipswich Prep, Henley Primary and St Margaret’s Primary, and got to explore the world of jazz with professional musicians.

Later in the afternoon, a series of workshops were held for older students, covering singing, jazz guitar and saxophone. These workshops were fantastic opportunities for musicians to hone their skills and explore a new genre of music. The day was capped off with the Blues, Boogie and Swing Special in the evening. As well as two saxophonists who are top names in the world of jazz – Derek Nash and Anna Brooks – the Ipswich School Saxophone Ensemble and Big Band performed alongside the professionals, and there were also vocal performances from Ed P (Year 11) and Zara M (Year 12).

It was a truly fantastic show for everyone, and a great example of music at Ipswich School.

Barbara S, Year 12
