Pupils attend climate change conference

The climate conference on July 3 included 230 enthusiastic students and 30 incredible organisers, and a group of Geography students, Eco Team members and Occasional student journalists from Ipswich School were lucky enough to attend.

The day featured an inspirational speech from Chris Packham, who is a naturalist, television presenter, writer, photographer, conservationist, campaigner and filmmaker. He uses his influence in order to help preserve our planet for future generations. Hearing from him encouraged many of the young people at the conference to take action and start caring for the future of our earth.

We also heard from Kids Against Plastic which is a group started by Ella and Amy Meek when they were just 10 and 12 years old. Their organisation has been inspiring people for seven years and brings awareness to the responsibility the next generation has to reduce climate change and pollution.

I attended a flood management seminar where we learnt about the social, economical and environmental effects of building infrastructure such as dams and levees in order to reduce the chance of damage to local areas due to storm floods.

My second activity was on video games and the climate. These were mostly educational games which are a fun and appealing way to encourage children from a young age to care about the planet that we call home.

It was a great opportunity to learn more about climate change and how we can take action.
