At the end of the half term holiday, on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 February, Ipswich School artists took part in a Vigil for Ukraine.
The event was hosted by Together for Ipswich at St Mary at the Elms Church, to mark two years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. As part of this, Year 8 Ipswich School pupils created dove paintings using the Ukrainian painting technique Petrykivka, which were displayed at the church. The aim was to support Ukrainian refugees in Ipswich and foster reflection on the conflict.
Visitors could light a candle or sign a book in support, pray, reflect, and connect with others, or create artwork of their interpretation of “My Ukraine”.
Art teacher Ms Shevchenko said: “The Ukrainian community was very impressed with the quality of the students’ work and their understanding of traditional Ukrainian painting. Visitors were very grateful for all the support that Ipswich School has shown to Ukrainian refugees and the event itself was very moving indeed.”
