Ukraine appeals are launched

Headmaster Mr Weaver addressed the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia in his assembly last week, heralding a number of activities here at Ipswich School. Instead of focusing on the political tragedies and pointless loss of life, the humanity of those involved was highlighted. From the bravery of the many Russian citizens putting
themselves at risk to protest against the war, to the touching camaraderie of the opposing sides over a broken down armoured car, the strength of humanity shines through the pain, he explained. However these small moments of relief do not counteract the severity and heartbreak of the situation. As more and more cities in Ukraine
are besieged, bombed, and ransacked, we must think of the civilians. The people that bring the country of Ukraine to life are now fighting for their lives and right to stay in their own country.

Already, more than a million Ukrainians have crossed the border to escape the intensifying violence, into countries like Poland, Romania, and Moldova. It is expected that this will be a mere quarter of the eventual asylum seekers due to the conflict. The majority of refugees at this time have been mothers and their children, with only a small amount of luggage and the clothes on their backs. The huge number of impending refugees on their journey to find peace need our help, and as a school we have the responsibility and initiative to give as much assistance as possible.

Although we have already chosen Suffolk Rape Crisis as our charity of the term and have a planned non-uniform day planned for Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 March to raise money for the organisation, the school aims to match the amount of money raised to send to Ukraine charity appeals.

To fund this, we ask that instead of the usual £2 donation, each student brings £4 to be donated to the two different causes. Additionally, a shoe box collection has been launched, with students asked to bring in a range of useful products, like sanitary items, warm clothes and notebooks, in a box ready to be sent out to Ukraine in a link up with a Bury St Edmunds charity. Various boxes can be made up for different age groups and genders, and a comprehensive
and useful list of required items was sent out in IS Post last week. Filled boxes were to be returned to the New Dining Hall the morning of 7 March.

Rev has also added a special ‘Thoughts for Ukraine’ table between the Dining Hall and the main entrance. Please add your thoughts and prayers using the paper and pens provided. These small acts of kindness could make the
difference to an individual or a family – minor sacrifices to us equating to a saving grace for others. It’s the least we can do to show our own humanity, and stand with those struggling
to end this pointless tragedy.
