Ipswich School announced in January 2014 that it was to support girls' cricket.
The appointment of Stuart Furmston as Head of Girls Cricket, whose background in coaching at county level, has proved invaluable in the development of the sport and players at Ipswich School. Indeed, as a result of focused coaching sessions over the summer holidays we were delighted with the recent announcement by Suffolk Cricket that eleven Ipswich School Girls have now been selected to represent the County at various age levels for the 2016-17 season.
Suffolk Cricket recently said of Ipswich School: "The development of girls' cricket across the country in recent years has seen it become the fastest growing sport for girls. Within Suffolk, Ipswich School have firmly been on the front foot in supporting girls cricket throughout the player pathway. This has been evident in their team success in County and National competitions and individual success with pupils achieving County selection."
Since 2014 the sport has gone from strength to strength with around 50-60 girls regularly attending the Monday after school cricket club and playing competitive matches against other likeminded schools from around the region.
Having entered the prestigious Lady Taverners Girls Cricket Tournament for the first time in 2014, Ipswich School went on to become District Champions at both U13 and U15 age groups and 2014 County Champions at the U13 age level. This was fantastic progress in our very first year.
In March 2015 Ipswich School again tasted success in this competition retaining their District Champions status at both U13 and U15 age groups, however this time going on to lift the County Championship trophy at U15 level and receiving an invitation to attend the Regional Tournament in Leicester. At the Regionals the Ipswich girls won all their group fixtures but narrowly lost (by just one wicket) in the final itself.
In 2016 both the U13 and U15 Girls teams won the South Suffolk Indoor Tournaments and both also went on to be Crowned County Champions a month later. At the Combined Midlands and East Regional Finals the U13’s came 3rd overall and the U15s lost in the final to come 2nd.
The 2015 and 2016 summer terms have been exciting times for girls’ cricket. The group coaching sessions continue on a Monday evening (4.30pm to 6pm), the opportunity for 1 to 1 lunchtime coaching sessions available to all girls upon request, and a full schedule of matches at U13, U15, U16 and U18 age levels were played, with Ipswich remaining unbeaten at U15, U16 and U18 level.
From the Summer term 2017 Girls Cricket will become a Focus Sport at Ipswich School ensuring that all girls in years 7 & 8 have the opportunity to be coached and play girls cricket as part of their weekly Games afternoon programme as well as being an Option for years 9-13.
If your daughter is interested in playing cricket then please come along to the after school club on a Monday or pop along to see Mr Furmston in the Director of Sport’s office for more information.
