Rugby at Ipswich School promotes a sense of worth and team spirit and encourages pupils to become leaders. We offer the pupils the opportunity to play rugby matches for A and B teams, throughout the year groups, with a very competitive fixture list.

We encourage participation at all levels of the game, whilst supporting many talented pupils, who are registered with the representative squads for the County, Regional Player Development Group and Northampton Saints.

An inspiring thirty acres of magnificently maintained grass land at Notcutts playing fields allow block fixtures to be played throughout the Michaelmas term, with training taking place twice a week for every team. A specialist Front Row club has been established during the Summer term that promotes the forwards’ understanding and conditioning required for success.

Tours to Canada, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy and Cumbria have benefitted the development of our players on and off the pitch.

Ipswich take on Ipswich on the rugby field

Ipswich School welcomed the rugby team from Ipswich Grammar School Australia, in December 2013, to the Notcutts' playing fields on Henley Road.

The Australian team met the school’s 1st XV for their first match, in a two week long European tour, and it was a toughly fought end-to-end game. The visitors started strongly scoring four tries in quick succession and the home side battled with an injury-depleted squad to pull the game back, but managed to play some good rugby towards the end of the first half.

The second half began, as the first had ended, with the Australian side being increasingly unable to deal with the English when the home side had the ball. However, despite this positive play from Ipswich School, the Ipswich Grammar School side ran out the winners 36-17.

Iain Gall, Head of Rugby at Ipswich School, said: “This was a very exciting game for all concerned, and a good test for some of our second team players who were playing up in the first team. The Australians were a strong side, and we wished them all the best for the remainder of their tour.”
