Library book returned… 50 years later!

Dealing with books being returned late is very much a day-to-day job in a Library and it’s one that we take pretty seriously in order that our collection of books is maintained for the benefit of all. It is however really rather unusual to have a book returned that was borrowed over fifty years ago!

However that is what happened when a mysterious parcel arrived in the Library on the first day of term.

The book in question, Village Cricket by A.J. Forrest, had been “looked after” by an Old Ipswichian who had had been a pupil at the school between 1957 and 1965. The book was accompanied by a rather humorous letter where the borrower offers us his assurance that his guilt “for denying generations of students the pleasure of reading (the book)…is far greater a punishment than the threat of any fees incurred for its late return!”

We were rather disappointed to discover that we are not ‘record breakers’ as our Media team discovered that in 2016 a book was returned to a school library some 120 years late.

You can see the photo and book here.
