Students share the fruits of their labour

Foodshare is a national, volunteer-powered charity which connects growers – schools, allotments, community and kitchen gardeners – with local charities.

Their vision is for every school to have a Foodshare Bed and every grower to sow a little extra and share their surpluses with local charities that feed people.

Since 2010, over £100,000 of produce has been donated nationwide, with over 7,000 school children already ‘Growing to Give’ across the UK, with other countries to follow. Ipswich School joined the scheme in 2010, and now have a very successful allotment in the Westwood garden.

They grow a variety of herbs and vegetables, including pumpkins, Brussel sprouts, blueberries, broad beans, potatoes and courgettes. It is a schoolwide activity, with many eager students and teachers pitching in. The teaching staff also help contribute to the compost with their used teabags and coffee grounds!

The school donate the produce they grow to the St Elizabeth Hospice. Mrs Catchpole, English Teacher who runs this Thursday afternoon activity, said the herb garden was particularly beneficial for the patients in the hospice, due to its sensory properties.
