Head or Teacher of German, full-time or part-time

Closing Date: 21/03/2019
Interview Date: 25/03/2019

This vacancy has arisen due to the retirement of our long-standing Head of German, and we welcome applications seeking both full-time and part-time (greater than 0.6) roles.

We are looking to appoint a teacher who can offer German to A Level and university entrance, with the possibility of taking on the role of the Head of Subject, for which some remission from teaching is granted.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic classroom practitioner, committed to interactive and engaging teaching styles, who can demonstrate an ability to inspire pupils with a love of German, and achieve excellent levels of pupil progress. You would also be expected to contribute to the Department’s trips to Germany.

Please can you make it clear in your application whether you are interested in a full-time or part-time position, and also whether you would be interested in becoming our Head of German.

The Modern Languages Department is housed in a suite of bright and modern classrooms that include a fully equipped digital Language Laboratory, and it is well resourced. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, mini-whiteboards and networked listening materials. All pupils in all years have a textbook of their own for the year.

The Department has a biennial trip to Germany for Middle School pupils, and a Sixth Form work experience trip to Germany.

Ipswich School values Modern Languages very highly, and is proud of our ongoing successes against a difficult national picture. All pupils entering Year 7 have a free choice between beginning Spanish or French, which they will continue to study throughout Years 8 and 9 as well. German is introduced at the start of Year 9, when all pupils have the opportunity to take a further Modern Language, Russian being the other option available: typically 75% of pupils choose to do so. Numbers in German are rising from 2 sets in Year 9 in 2018-19 to 3 sets in 2019-20, and the appointed person would be instrumental in inspiring a significant proportion to opt for German at GCSE and, potentially, A Level.

All pupils study at least one language to GCSE, and a considerable proportion takes both languages that they have studied in Year 9. At GCSE and A Level, we follow the Edexcel specifications, and have renewed our resources to match this. In recent years the school has also attracted pupils from elsewhere into the Sixth Form to study A Level German. The Department sends a healthy number of students on to language study at university every year, including, for most of the last ten years, to Oxbridge.

Application forms and a full job description can be downloaded using the links above.

Completed application forms, with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees, should be sent as soon as possible to the Headmaster, Mr N Weaver, Ipswich School, 25 Henley Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 3SG, email hr@ipswich.school. The closing date is noon on Thursday 21 March 2019 and interviews will take place in the week commencing Monday 25 March.
