Music at Ipswich School

The Britten Faculty of Music

The Britten Faculty of Music at Ipswich School has an impressive reputation for being an environment where young musicians thrive. Dedicated teachers and state-of-the-art facilities provide a creative and stimulating experience for all pupils, fostering an atmosphere where all can achieve and the most able will excel.

Creating an exciting and challenging range of opportunities lies at the heart of all that we do as we empower pupils to create, compose and perform in a wide range of genres. We strive to inculcate a love of music in all our pupils from the very youngest members of the nursery through to the most senior members of the school. Our aim is to enrich students’ lives so that they can all engage with and appreciate music.

Within our state of the art Music school, we provide class music lessons from Y7 onwards and achieve a high level of success at both GCSE and A Level.  With access to amazing facilities, including a concert hall, Music Technology Suite and recital hall, all students enjoy outstanding music tuition and teaching from our experienced staff and over 25 visiting instrumental music teachers.

Co-curricular Activities

To cater for the many talented and enthusiastic musicians at Ipswich School we offer a wide range of musical activities throughout the week.  All musicians are encouraged to take part in an ensemble to widen their musical experiences, foster friendships and enjoy making music together.  We have a range of orchestras for all stages of musical development, culminating in our large Symphony Orchestra - a large orchestra of about 50 members.

Throughout the year there is an abundance of performance opportunities including: our annual school Spring Concert at Snape Maltings, solo lunchtime recitals, Annual Festival of Music,  Ipswich School Young Musician of the year competition, Midsummer Soirée, Community concerts and lunchtime and faculty recitals to name a few.

Music Scholars

Ipswich school provides the opportunity for exceptional young musicians to experience an outstanding academic education alongside first-class music teaching.  Music Scholars are welcomed and supported with enrichment opportunities, including, for some, the opportunity to perform a solo at Snape Maltings with our Symphony Orchestra.

Many of our Music scholars are members of National and Regional ensembles including: The National Youth Orchestra, The National Youth Choir of Great Britain, The Suffolk Youth Orchestra and Aldeburgh Young Musicians. A number of our students are also members of Junior Conservatoires in London.
