Wellbeing at Ipswich School
At Ipswich School, our goal is to help every pupil grow into a confident, resilient, and happy young adult, equipped for life both inside and beyond the classroom.
At Ipswich School, the wellbeing of every pupil is a priority. We believe that a supportive, caring environment is essential for learning, growth and happiness. Pupils are encouraged to develop emotional resilience, self-awareness and positive habits that will serve them throughout their lives.
Our dedicated pastoral team works closely with teachers, parents and pupils to ensure that everyone feels supported, safe and valued. We provide guidance on emotional, social and academic challenges, helping pupils to build confidence and navigate school life successfully.
Wellbeing is embedded in all aspects of school life. From mental health support and pastoral care to physical activity, healthy living and mindfulness, pupils have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. Ipswich School creates an environment where children feel secure, respected and empowered to be themselves.
A Whole-School Approach
Wellbeing runs through all aspects of school life, from pastoral care and mentoring to co-curricular activities and boarding support.
Every member of staff shares responsibility for nurturing a positive, safe, and inclusive environment.
Pastoral Care
- Form Teachers in the Prep School (Reception - Year 6): These teachers spend the majority of their day with their Form group. Here they build close relationships enabling each child to thrive in a safe and caring environment.
- Form Tutors in Lower School (Years 7 and 8): These tutors build on the exceptional pastoral care of the Prep School model by being the daily point of contact that each tutee can turn to. They play a crucial role in ensuring that every child’s individual needs are met and that they feel fully supported throughout their transition into the Senior School. Alongside the Form Tutors, there is a Head of Year 7 and a Head of Year 8, both of whom provide additional oversight and guidance. An overarching Head of Lower School leads the section as a whole. Together, this pastoral team works collaboratively to ensure that all pupils are cared for, supported, and encouraged to thrive both academically and personally.
- House-Based Tutor System (Years 9–13): In the Upper School, tutors work within the House system, building close and supportive relationships with pupils and guiding them through daily life, academic progress, and personal development. Each House is led by a Head of House, who provides additional oversight and continuity of care. Supporting this structure are the Heads of Section for Years 9–11 and for the Sixth Form, ensuring a coordinated approach across all year groups. The entire pastoral team works collaboratively to ensure that every pupil is fully supported, valued, and encouraged to reach their potential both in and beyond the classroom.
- Dedicated support teams: Counsellors, Play Therapist, SENDCO, chaplain, wellbeing coordinator, and medical staff provide expert care for all pupils from 4 - 18 years.
- Strong links with families: Open communication ensures pupils’ needs are understood and supported.
Supporting Resilience and Growth
- Lessons in emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and personal skills help pupils manage challenges and thrive
- Opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility through PSHE lessons, Form Tutor times and co-curricular programmes
Boarding and Wellbeing
Boarding houses provide a safe, nurturing home-from-home environment where pupils can relax, form friendships, and balance school life with rest and recreation.
