What Makes Our Sixth Form Different?

The Edge

The Edge is a distinctive Sixth Form programme designed to equip Ipswich School students with the skills, confidence, and independence needed to thrive in a rapidly changing and competitive world.

Developed in response to feedback from universities, employers, and parents, it focuses on areas of personal development not always addressed through academic study alone.

Delivered across Years 12 and 13 in four lessons per fortnight, The Edge is followed by all students (except those taking Further Maths). Through a rotating programme of modules, students develop essential life skills including mental health first aid, cooking, nutrition and budgeting, digital responsibility, public speaking, health and fitness, financial literacy, law and civic responsibility, cultural awareness, and complex problem-solving. Students also attend a series of conferences designed to be thought-provoking and relevant to life beyond school.

The programme closely supports the university application cycle, with dedicated UCAS preparation, an annual Higher Education evening for parents and students, and guidance on alternative pathways such as degree apprenticeships and school leaver programmes.

Students wishing to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) begin at the end of Year 12, allowing independent research over the summer and taught and mentored support in Year 13.

A highlight of The Edge is a residential week in Devon at the end of Year 12. During this experience, students take part in outdoor activities while developing practical life skills such as personal safety, stress management, interview skills, and independent living — including planning, budgeting, and cooking their own meals.

The Edge programme concludes by Easter of Year 13, ensuring students are fully prepared to focus on academic revision and final examinations.
