Ipswich School Receives New Honours Board to Celebrate Hockey Captains

Ipswich School is proud to announce a special new addition to the Ipswich School Sports Centre in Rushmere, thanks to the generous donation from the Edmond family. Prior to Christmas, the school had the pleasure of welcoming three Old Ipswichians – Rory, Gus, and JJ Edmond – who, alongside their mother, Mrs.Fiona Edmond, presented a beautifully crafted honours board that will display the names of the 1st XI hockey captains.

The Edmond family’s long association with Ipswich School spans an impressive 19 years, beginning in 2005 when their eldest four children, Meg, Luke, Sam and Angus, joined the school, and concluding in 2023 when JJ, the youngest, graduated. Over this time, all six members of the Edmond family contributed to the school’s hockey programme, with firstly Meg, and subsequently each of the five boys playing in teams that reached National Finals on multiple occasions.

Reflecting on their family’s connection to the school, Mrs. Edmond commented, “Ipswich School played an all-encompassing part in our lives for a total of 19 years. All six of our children were shaped by their time at the school, and we felt it would be fitting to leave a lasting legacy by recognising the 1st XI captains who have led the team since the opening of Rushmere and going forwards.”

The Edmond family’s contribution has been particularly significant in the school’s hockey programme, where the boys’ involvement and success were closely supported by Ben Edmondson, former Director of Sport at Ipswich School.

Ben remarked, “The Edmond family have been incredible supporters of Ipswich School, and especially of the hockey programme. I had the privilege of working with Gus, Rory, and JJ during my time here, and all three boys brought great success to the school. More importantly, they have used their time at Ipswich to grow into the fine young men they are today. The new Captains board is a fitting tribute to their family’s commitment to the school, and we are incredibly grateful not just for the generous gift, but for the trust they placed in us to educate their children.”

Ipswich School looks forward to celebrating the Edmond family’s contribution to the school community and welcoming the boys – and the wider Old Ipswichian (OI) community – to a series of events in the coming year. The school also looks forward to continuing the tradition of adding future captains to this wonderful new honours board.
