New Head planned for Ipswich School

Ipswich School will have a new Head from September 2024, following the news that current Headmaster, Nicholas Weaver, will be stepping down in the summer after 14 years at the helm of the school, recently acclaimed as the top independent school in Suffolk in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide for the eighth year in a row.

Chairman of Governors, Henry Staunton wrote to Ipswich School parents today (Monday 11 December) to explain that the search has begun for “a strong successor to take over from Nick and to lead Ipswich School with similar commitment and resolve,” explaining how the school has gone from strength to strength, growing in numbers and reputation, under the leadership of Mr Weaver.

Nicholas Weaver said: “I love Ipswich School and have loved my time leading it, for nearly fourteen years of its centuries of history. Together with some outstanding staff and wonderful pupils we have achieved a great deal, both academically and in the co-curriculum, providing a proper all-round education. Having achieved so many goals, I now feel that it is time for me to move on to something different and new. Although I will miss sharing the day to day joy of young people reaching great heights, I will be excited to see Ipswich School go from strength to strength in the next chapter of its long life in the town.”

Ipswich School successes during Mr Weaver’s headship:

  • Inspected and awarded the top rating of ‘Excellent’ in every inspection category on two occasions by the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate).
  • Placed second in the Co-Educational Independent School category at the Independent School of the Year 2022 awards.
  • Ipswich School teams have been national champions six times in hockey and cricket and the school has broken into the top 20 ranked schools for sport in the country.
  • School ensembles have been national finalists in music competitions.
  • Ipswich School has achieved its highest ever placing in the Sunday Times Parent Power league tables for academic results this year, at 126th, as one of the top ten schools in East Anglia and the top independent school in Suffolk.
