“After starting my cricket journey at Ipswich School, I am delighted to have signed my first fully professional contract with my home county, Essex. The support I received at school laid the foundations for where I am today, and I’ll always be grateful for the incredible coaching and encouragement that sparked my love for the game.”
Esmae MacGregor, (OI 2015-2022) has recently signed with Essex Women’s Cricket Team, marking a significant milestone in her cricket journey. Currently in her final year at Loughborough University, where she is studying International Business, Esmae’s dedication to both academics and sport has been truly remarkable.
Esmae’s cricket journey began somewhat unexpectedly when she joined Ipswich School in Year 7. “I’d never even picked up a cricket bat before,” she recalls. Inspired by her older brother Joe and encouraged by friends and coaches, she decided to attend a training session at the urging of her best friend. That moment sparked a passion for the game that would shape her future.
Starting in the U13 girls’ team, Esmae quickly progressed, representing the U15 side and joining the 1st XI by Year 8. Under the mentorship of coaches Mr Boje and Mr Bennet-King, her cricketing skills flourished. Esmae credits their support, along with the guidance of Mr Edmondson as instrumental in her development, saying: “Their dedication and belief in me were pivotal. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and guidance.”
One of Esmae’s standout achievements during her time at Ipswich School was reaching the U18 national finals in 2018. “Although we didn’t win, finishing second was a fantastic achievement,” she said. “The experience of competing at that level with such an amazing group of teammates is something I’ll never forget. We worked hard but always kept it fun, which made it so special.”
As part of the performance cricket squad at Loughborough, Esmae trains twice a week and balances rigorous gym and conditioning sessions with her university commitments. She also commutes home twice a week to train with Essex, showcasing her commitment to her sport. Reflecting on the balancing act, Esmae shared, “It’s been challenging, but it’s also been hugely rewarding.”
Now, as Esmae embarks on this exciting chapter with Essex Women’s Cricket Team, she continues to be an inspiration to young cricketers at Ipswich School and beyond. Her journey from a complete novice to a signed player at a prestigious team is a testament to her hard work, determination, and the power of supportive coaching at Ipswich School.
