The Ipswich School Britten Faculty of Music

The Britten Faculty of Music caters for everyone from enthusiastic beginners to gifted musicians.

All pupils have music lessons as part of their timetable until Year 10 and we can guarantee that everyone will be involved in some type of music making. Our New Music School provides the very best in teaching and practice rooms. It also has a large rehearsal room, a keyboard laboratory and a music technology centre. We offer high academic standards in a creative musical environment, provided by dedicated teachers supported by approximately thirty visiting instrumental teachers.

Sixth Form students use the Britten Faculty of Music throughout the day and we have dedicated rooms available for students to use for instrumental practice or simply to enjoy making music with others.

A wide variety of groups rehearse and perform regularly: symphony, intermediate and chamber orchestras; school and chapel choirs; show choir; choral society; chamber music groups; ensembles for strings, brass, flutes, clarinets and saxophones; big band, stage band, jazz and rock bands.

We encourage a passion for performance alongside these activities and offer a wide variety of different performance opportunities from informal concerts to our annual spring concert at the renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall.

A significant number of our sixth form musicians have gone on to secure music scholarships at universities and many have followed careers in the world of music and arts.

Online performances

Even the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped our music, as we find ourselves singing, playing and rehearsing virtually. This has given teachers and pupils a unique opportunity to think differently and more creatively about the way we make music together.

“It has been an utterly superb few years in Ipswich School’s Music Faculty and this is to thank you for all you have done during my time here.  I am really going to miss everything that goes with being a member of such a friendly, widely-talented and encouraging group of people.” A Level student
