Marking Refugee Week

In the Headmaster’s Assembly last week there was a focus on both Refugee Week and the Giving Day which is raising money for bursaries to help some Ukrainian students come to Ipswich School next year. We watched a special video that told the story of Tekle, a current Year 13 student here at Ipswich School.

Tekle’s story is one of the most inspiring stories we have ever heard. His journey began in Eritrea, which is located in eastern Africa between Sudan and Ethiopia. The country is corrupt and full of conflict, along with people being forced to join the military at 15 for life. At 14 Tekle fled persecution from Eritrea and went on an 18 month
journey, completely alone, until he finally reached the UK. He spent some time in foster care in Essex but at 15 came into Ipswich, living alone with help of social services. He wasted no time and went from not knowing English
to getting a 6 in his GCSE which is truly incredible and just proves how you really can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Tekle got help from English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) as well as the refugee support homework club which runs at Ipswich School one evening a week, with the support of many teachers, whose help for refugees should be recognised..

Tekle was given a full bursary to join the school at 18 and study for A Levels here, and is now hoping to go on to an apprenticeship at BT. Tekle is an absolute legend and we hope you feel inspired by his incredible journey.
