Last Wednesday, Year 11 geographers went to the Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford to carry out a piece of GCSE geography field work. As a part of the GCSE geography course we are required to learn about urbanisation and an excellent example of urban regeneration and sustainability is E20.
We had to conduct a survey of people in the area, and found out that most of them came from other parts of London which tells us that housing is mostly unaffordable and undesirable. Before the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Stratford was mainly waste and industrial land, also known as ‘Stinky Stratford’, right next to the heart of London. As the venue for the 2012 Olympics, Stratford was then regenerated and improved by adding more urban vegetation, creating a better habitat such as ponds and woodlands, as well as making use of recycled materials to build sports facilities.
These were some of the areas which we were able to see on our field trip, Thank you to the Geography staff for arranging the visit for us.
