Masterclass for school cellists

Ipswich School Cello Masterclass

We were thrilled to welcome James Halsey from the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music to the Britten Faculty of Music where he gave a workshop and masterclass to our cellists.

The afternoon started with a workshop for the nine-strong cello choir, where the focus was on posture, bow control and working as an ensemble. James gave a talk about the development of cello technique viewed through the prism of the Bach cello suites which was illuminating and a lesson in history as well as the cello!

During the interval, we were entertained by a cello sextet whilst we enjoyed refreshments on the lawn. This was followed by a masterclass where Basti, Daniel, Elsie and Matilda worked on solo repertoire whilst the audience watched. James encouraged all players to think about the technical aspects of playing to develop tone and secure intonation which was equally relevant to players of other string instruments.

It was a lovely evening, and parents, pupils and performers all learned a great deal. We are extremely grateful to James for coming all the way from the Isle of Wight to come and work with us at what proved to be a really exciting event.
