Mr Faiers’ Arctic Challenge

Some of us may be looking forward to relaxing on a beach during the summer holidays, but not Mr Faiers! Our Head of Study Skills is planning a fundraising challenge which will see him donning his wetsuit and swimming from Finland to Sweden, across the Arctic Circle Line.

The plan is to start swimming the three kilometres of open water from the Finnish shore just after midnight – when the summer nights are always light. If he completes the swim to Sweden in less than 55 minutes he will arrive the day before he left, due to the time zone change! The open water swimming challenge is an annual event which will see Mr Faiers swimming in the free-flowing water in the Torne river, in temperatures between 16 and 19 degrees. Mr Faiers has been training for the swim for the last 6 months and will be raising money for the Ipswich School Founding Futures bursary fund.

Mr Faiers said: “Being able to swim between two countries, across the Arctic Circle Line, and in the middle of the night is too good a chance to miss! A knee injury means running has not been possible for many months, so training for this has been a great way to keep active whilst raising money for a great cause.”
