Exploring jobs in IT

On Friday 30 September, sixteen Year 8 girls were given the opportunity to visit BT Adastral Park in Martlesham. This was to encourage more females to join the IT sector.

When we first got there, we were given a talk about BT and the history of it. The whole event was very educational and interesting and certainly opened up the eyes of many of us. The park is so large that it even has its own ambulance and mini fire station containing two fire trucks. During the tour we were given chances to interact with the intelligence and artificial intelligence there. This included Ms Denby teleporting with the help of their technology.

We also learnt how BT is trying to improve things in our day-to-day living. For example, the ‘domes’ or ugly green boxes that take up space on the pavement – well, BT is working on a small device that can go underground instead, freeing space and generally making things look better. There was also technology that when holding a remote and moving it around, it created your design on a screen.

Some of the girls who were interested got to find out more about apprenticeships and internships for when they’re older. All in all it’s safe to say everyone had a great time.
