Year 13s attend Philosophy Conference

Last Tuesday, both Year 13 PRE classes travelled to London by train to attend a prestigious Philosophy Conference. After a short walk to The Insurance Hall, we settled down to listen to Dr James Orr. His lecture on Bentham’s Utilitarianism and Kantian ethics was particularly interesting because he cleverly drew out the similarities of the two philosophies as well as the differences.

Professor AC Grayling continued in style discussing Atheism, Humanism and Secularism, explaining how he manages to subscribe to all three. The last of the three lectures was given by the iconic Professor Richard Swinburne, whose views are a key part of the PRE syllabus. He spoke engagingly about his arguments for the existence of God.

It was a great trip that made us think about the subject at a deeper and more intellectual level and helped reinforce much of what we will be revising in the coming months.
