Dial Medicine for Murder

On Monday 6 March, Dr Harry Brunjes and Dr Andrew Johns gave a lecture in Great School: Dial Medicine for Murder. Their interesting and educational talk was about two doctors, Dr Harold Shipman and Dr John Bodkin-Adams, who were serial killers who both murdered many of their patients. The talk opened in a dramatic sense, with both speakers each setting the scene for the trial of Shipman and the judgement of Bodkin- Adams.

Bodkin-Adams specifically targeted widows, who he would inject with a lethal dose of morphine and then persuade these women to add him into their will so that he would inherit their money. Both doctors were put on trial, but only one was convicted. Harold Shipman, who was convicted of the murder of 15 patients under his care, was sentenced to life imprisonment and later hanged himself, whereas Bodkin- Adams walked free. This was mainly due to how the case was handled in court.

The speakers questioned the morality of the doctors, talking about their motives and what they did. There was also a question and answer session at the end of their talk. Both speakers were confident and made the talk very enjoyable.
