Geographers explore Olympic Park

Last Wednesday, our Year 11 geographers journeyed to Stratford in London in order to experience our Queen Elizabeth regeneration case study in person.

In order to deepen our required knowledge of the regeneration of the Olympic Park for our paper three geography exam, we experienced a packed day of carrying out a multitude of interesting activities. We departed from Ivry street nice and early at 8.30 for an 11am arrival at Stratford where we split off into groups – one group studying the north of the park and one group studying the south.

The group which started in the south had the opportunity to go inside the Aquatics Centre and note down its progression from 2012 and then were allowed to go off in groups of three of four around the key areas in the southern part of the park whilst carrying out tasks of counting pedestrians and giving each area a score based on cleanliness, sustainability and many more.

Meanwhile, the group beginning in the north were able to visit many exciting sites, such as the velodrome and Here East, whilst also carrying out surveys, counting pedestrians and rating the sites on certain aspects. At 1pm we all then went to the biggest shopping centre in an urban area in the whole of Europe – otherwise known as Westfield! We were allowed to have 45 mins of shopping and lunch – our group went to a delicious bakery and benefitted from the many shops which have been drawn to this newly trending Stratford area.

For the second half of the trip, we swapped sides of the park so that each student would have the opportunity to experience every aspect in order to fully enhance our understanding of the case study, benefitting our learning prior to GCSEs this summer.

Overall it was certainly an informative and exciting trip that we will remember – thank you to the Geography Department!
